How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Day of Daycare

Sending your little one to daycare for the very first time is a major milestone for families, and often, more than a little emotional. However, the reality is that it’s often tougher on parents than on the kids! You might be feeling a wild mix of excitement, guilt, and nerves. That’s completely normal. Entering care for the first time is a big step.

If you are gearing up to start daycare in West Vancouver, please know you aren’t alone. We see this transition every single week. It takes a little patience. There will probably be a few tears. But with a few simple steps, you can set your child up for a smooth, happy start.

Here is how we recommend preparing your family for the big day.

Start Shifting the Routine Early

Kids thrive on predictability. It makes them feel safe. About a week or two before their first day, start shifting their home schedule to match the daycare’s routine.

If their new centre serves lunch at 11:30 AM and has nap time at noon, try to mirror that at home. It makes the new environment feel much more familiar when the time comes. Plus, a well-rested child is a happy child. Don’t forget to practice the new morning wake-up time, too! Rushing out the door on day one just adds unnecessary stress for everyone.

Keep the Conversation Positive

Talk about the fun they are going to have. “You get to play with new toys today!” or “You’re going to make so many new friends.”

Kids are absolute sponges. They pick up on our energy instantly. If you seem confident and happy about the drop-off, they will naturally feel safer. Read a few picture books about going to school or daycare together. It helps them visualize what’s coming and takes the mystery out of the experience.

Practice Short Goodbyes

Separation anxiety is completely normal. In fact, child development experts note it usually peaks around 14 to 18 months. To make the big day easier, practice short separations beforehand.

Leave them with a grandparent or a trusted sitter for an hour or two. When you leave, keep your goodbyes brief, cheerful, and firm. Lingering at the door usually makes the tears last much longer. And whatever you do, don’t sneak out when they aren’t looking! This breaks their trust. Just give a quick hug, a smile, and a cheerful “See you after work!”

Pack a Little Piece of Home

Transitions are always easier with a familiar friend. Pack their favourite stuffed animal, a special cozy blanket, or even a laminated family photo in their backpack. When they feel a bit overwhelmed in a new space, having that tiny piece of home provides instant, tangible comfort.

Lean on a Nurturing Team
